English Premier League Club, Liverpool FC is making its initial move into the non-fungible token (NFT) world with the launch of its own collection. Dubbed the LFC Heroes Club NFTs, the art collection displaying the 24 key members of the club, is developed in collaboration with Sotheby’s Metaverse.
Sotheby’s is one of the oldest and largest auction houses which made its initial entry into the NFT world early last year. The first non-fungible token art pieces ever sold by the auction house was designed by an anonymous artist who was known as Pak; its sales started in the peak of April 2021.
Ever since then, Sotheby has been giving popularity to artists who wish to shield their faces from the public while growing their brand name. Sotheby’s came up with its digital marketplace Sotheby Metaverse much later in the year to allow experts from the auction house to choose curated non-fungible token art collections for its bidders.
The supporters can purchase the NFTs by making a transfer or through an exchange wallet that will be approved by Sotheby’s. For now, the auction house will accept payment either in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), or USD Coin (USDC). This Liverpool Club’s partnership with the auction house is one of the first for Sotheby’s with a sports arm.
For LFC with about millions of supporters, this will be a major means of celebrating fans’ commitment to the club from any part of the globe. The players will be characterized with beautiful art pieces as NFTs. Each legendary individual edition of NFT will be auctioned as a separate (one-on-one edition) entity on Wednesday 30th March.
Considering the purpose of even distribution and accessibility, the remnant of the non-fungible tokens will be sold at a relatively low price, starting from $75. This move is a result of the club’s wish to reach almost all its broad fan base with these unique collectibles.
The Marriage Between Sports and Crypto Firms
Other football clubs like Manchester City FC and Barcelona FC are also making moves into the NFT metaverse. Joan Laporta, President of the Barcelona Club announced during the Mobile World Congress 2022 that the indigenous club had decided to launch its NFTs.
Just like Liverpool FC, Barcelona FC’s goal is to improve the financial status of its fanbase. The Sports industry is reckoning greatly with the digital world and blockchain technology and the impact is becoming more evident as time progresses.
